Filing a dispute
Many people who have reviewed their personal credit reports are often shocked to see errors and mistakes in
their credit history. Not only will this effect your credit score, but it will also cause creditors to view you as
a liability, and this is often not your fault.
Credit report errors and mistakes are unfortunately very common and often the result of human and computer input
mistakes.
If you do indeed wish to be seen as a worthy candidate as a credit customer, you must seek to rectify these
problem which will require you to file a dispute.
As errors are indeed common, a dispute can be relatively easy to implement and should be done with the upmost of
haste and importance.
The most time consuming rectification of any error on your credit history is actually your credit card. Often
these credit card companies will spell your name incorrectly or your address may be inaccurate. If you consider the
amount of people in America today, the likelihood that you share your name with someone else is often quite high
and can leave you in their credential status, rather than your own.
What you need to do when filing a dispute with a credit card company is actually contact both the bureau and the
credit card company as they will both need to know where and why the corrections need to be made.
Credit report errors are not so time consuming but still require a level of importance that should not be
ignored.
Often these types of errors that require rectification are clerical errors and an incredible 60-70% of all
reports consist of errors of this form. As a consumer, it is your legal right to file a dispute and the bureau must
investigate your claim. If you choose to ignore these sometimes small errors, the one thing that you may consider
is the cost in the long term. A poorer credit report and score will mean that future creditors may offer you credit
at a higher rate, than say, if you were to have an accurate score that gives a true reflection of your actual
credit standing.
It is also true that a bad mark on your report, also lasts longer than a good one, so it's adamant that you file
these disputes as quick as possible.
Firstly you must try and obtain proof of the error in question, and if you can get this in written form from the
source of the incorrect information now lying on your report, this will help your case greatly.
Finally, for this case, and in fact, any dispute that you would like to file, it is highly recommended that you
inform the agency or bureau as soon as you see any discrepancies on your report.
The errors that can appear on your credit report and reflected in your score can appear in many different forms.
If you find something that you are unsure about or simply cannot recall, make an enquiry as quick as possible to
avoid any unwanted happenings to your financial standing.
